• Day 2 of the MTAL Girl’s Tennis Tournament

Savana McDowell of Pacific Grove finishes fourth at the MTAL girl’s tennis tournament on Thursday evening [11-6-14].End of the season

McDowell’s semi-finals match might have been the match of the tournament. She squared off against York’s Alyssa Pompan for the third time this season, with each of them having won once in the regular season.

After getting shutout in the first set 6-0, McDowell turned up the heat and came out strong to secure the second set victory, 6-4.

The third set was back and forth, with each girl struggling to gain an advantage. McDowell fell behind early 2-3, but quickly turned it around to go up 4-3. Pompan though, would return the favor and win the next two, to put her back up 5-4. McDowell answered the pressure and tied it back up at 5-5. Pompan responded and went back on top, 6-5. The last point would come down to the final serve, with McDowell hitting it into the net, giving Pompan the 7-5 victory and a chance to move into the finals.

As the evening grew on, McDowell readied herself to play York’s other participant, Lauren Sugar for third place.

After jumping out to a quick 5-4 lead, McDowell was unable to sustain it. Sugar made some great shots and was able to come from behind to take the first set, 7-5. Sugar would carry the momentum into the second set by going up 5-0. McDowell would not go down without a fight, and was able to bring the score to 2-5. A mishap by McDowell though, would give the set to Sugar and allow her to take third place.

Elise Stork of Santa Catalina took first place, with Alyssa Pompan of York taking second.
