• Best-selling author Debra Dean comes to PG Library

Debra Dean, bestselling author of The Madonnas of Lenningrad is coming to the Pacific Grove Library at 7 p.m. Oct. 15. She will be bringing with her, The Mirrored World, her new novel published in August.

Set against the backdrop of 18th century St. Petersburg the author re-imagines the life of St. Xenia. Born into nobility, the main character lives on the fringes of palace life during the reign of Catherine the Great. Told from the point of view of her devoted friend and childhood playmate, this is the story of a passionate soul who loves life too much.

“Love affairs, rivalries, intrigues, prophecy, cross-dressing, madness, sorrow, poverty — the Mirrored World is a litany of both the homely and the miraculous. Intimate and richly appointed, Debra Dean’s imperial St. Petersburg is as sumptuous and enchanted as the Winter Palace,” writes fellow author Stewart O’Nan.

Xenia’s transformation is at the heart of the novel: it is up to the reader to decide whether she is broken or transfigured. Either way, this is a story delicately told, and touches the soul.

Books will be available for purchase at the event and at The Works in Pacific Grove. Suggested donation to benefit the library is $10. Refreshments are included. For more information email FriendsPGLibrary@yahoo.com.
