• Boys Basketball: Breakers Open up MTAL play with Emphatic Victory

    – Jon Charron –

Pacific Grove showed up in big way in their Mission Trail Athletic League opener against Greenfield on Wednesday night. Brad Sendell led the Breakers with 21 points in their 74-32 victory over the Bruins [01-06-16].

After taking a 16-8 lead into the second quarter, the Breakers intensity seemed to strain a little. “We just were complacent,” Breakers head coach Brad Powers said. “We’re not the type of team that can just roll the balls out and show up”. While the Breakers actually extended their lead to 12 by the half, they seemed to lose a little of the luster that they came out with. After the first three minutes, Greenfield played harder than us; credit to them,” Powers added.

To start the third though, the Breakers got right back on track and looked the team that went to the CCS Semi-Finals last season. Jake Merenda and Gaurav Gurung both hit three pointers, while Brad Sendell and Chip Wagner both hit baskets to come out of the half on a 10-0 run. After Greenfield ended the run with a three pointer of their own, Merenda knocked in his second of three 3-pointers in the quarter to extend the lead back to 22.

The rest of the game was smooth sailing for the Breakers as they coasted to the victory. The Breakers didn’t allow more than 10 points in any quarter during the game.

“We’re excited about MTAL play,” Powers said. “And we would like to do well and you always want to get your first win at home.”

Chip Wagner chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds, while Jake Merenda hit four 3-pointers for 12 points.

Pacific Grove moved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in league play.

Pacific Grove (7-2, 1-0) will next play at King City (7-4, 1-0) on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.
