Spooky Doin’s
Decorated houses, downtown trick-or-treating, a haunted house at the library…Pacific Grove loves Halloween. There were fairies and princesses, super heroes, calypso dancers and one lone angler fish. There was a reluctant dragon and a pair of vampires as well as a small otter, and plenty of adults who got into the act. We recognized a reference librarian dressed as ….a reference librarian.
The family that trick-or-treats together…
During the Downtown Business Trick-or-Treat event held Sat, Oct. 26, a family that included a kitty cat, an otter and a very small tiger met with Officer Mark Young at Rabobank. Businesses decorated and distributed treats. Pacific Grove Police Officers dispensed junior officer badges, too. (Photo by Tony Prock.)
Fun in the Sun at Fiesta Del Perro
It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood. The neighborhood and all of the neighborhoods in Monterey County arrived for the second annual Fiesta del Perro at Robert Down School on Pine Avenue in Pacific Grove. They came with their dogs, very large, medium and tiny. They came to participate in the parade, to sport their jaunty costumes, to listen to the wonderful sounds of the Wharf Rats, to eat hot dogs and more, and to visit each “vendor” who provided information about animal related services and goods. There was a bountiful silent auction and opportunity to buy raffle tickets for Will Bullas’s painting.
It was a Pacific Grove Rotary event to benefit such activities as Smiles for Life, IHELP dinners, Polio Plus, Rotacare Clinic, Peace of Mind Dog Rescue and Animal Friends Rescue Project. There was a children’s art show, “fun” dog judging, a pet parade, demonstrations of agility by Motiv K9 Fitness, SPCA, D-Dog Agility, Zoom Room, and Dance-A-Bulls. .Major Sponsors: Rabobank, Coastal Canine Magazine, Carmel Holistic Vet Clinic, Cedar Street Times, Bryan Farm Equipment, Landi Court Reporters, Monterey Animal Hospital, Big Sur Marathon, and Quail Lodge Golf.
With all of the canines strutting their stuff there was nary an altercation. It was a happy day, one that will be repeated, hopefully, in perpetuity because, as we have maintained Pacific Grove is Dog Capital USA, it simply hasn’t been discovered.
The original painting created by Bullas for the poster was won by Frank Casas. The presentation was made on Tues., Oct. 7, at the Rotary luncheon meeting at The Inn at Spanish Bay. Casas then gave the painting to President Matt as his dog was featured in the art work.

PG High Musical – Aida
Fuddy Meers: A don’t-miss performance at PGHS
by Peter Mounteer
Fuddy Meers is a two act comedy featuring a cast of seven Pacific Grove High School students. It will have its final weekend May 9-11 in C-Wing Theatre at Pacific Grove High School. The production is by the PGHS Drama Department, and is directed by longtime English and Drama instructor, Tom Bussio.
The play traces the story of Claire (Sarah Gordon), an amnesiac with a naturally sunny outlook who awakens each morning with no memory of who she is or the life she has lived. She lives with her husband, Richard Fiffle (Matthew Mounteer), a nervous but compassionate and dedicated man who loves Claire dearly; and their son Kenny (Alex Thibeau) a troubled and angst-filled teenager with a fondness for marijuana.
The plot follows Claire’s departure from her home one day facilitated by a limping man with a lisp, claiming to be her brother Zachary (Brian Long). They leave while Richard is in the shower, headed to Claire’s mother’s house.
Supporting cast includes Zachary’s right-hand man, Millet (Anthony Berteaux) who talks to a puppet; Claire’s aging mother Gertie (Elaina Pennisi) who is very lucid but can’t speak properly due to a recent stroke; and Heidi, a police officer (Hannah Azerang) who gets involved after Richard and Kenny set out to find the missing Claire.
What ensues is a wildly entertaining escapade into a world where nothing truly is as it appears. The production is sometimes tragic and often funny rendition. It’s the kind of work playwright David Lindsay-Arbaire is perhaps best known for, as brought to life by the talented cast and crew of the PGHS Drama Department.
Show time is 7p.m. at C-Wing Theater on the Pacific Grove High School campus. Tickets are $7 at the door.

Earth Day and Our Community Garden
The plots are sold out and there is a waiting list for pieces of 7,500 square feet of garden space. Families, students, children, Service Learners, veteran gardeners and those just looking to enjoy a gorgeous day with nature came out to celebrate Earth Day in Pacific Grove’s Community Garden. There were displays and educational programs, crafts and a pot luck, a blessing by Khenpo Karten Rinpoche and poetry with Pacific Grove’s Poet-In-residence, Dr. Barbara Mossberg, plus our Poetry Out Loud champion Arwa Awan, and spontaneous music from Susie Joyce.
