Monterey County District Attorney Dean D. Flippo announced today that the case against Bobby Ray Knight, age 60, will proceed to trial.
After a 3-hour preliminary hearing, in which several eye witnesses testified, the Honorable Carrie M. Panetta found that there was sufficient cause to order that Knight stand trial on 6 counts of robbery. Knight is accused of robbing employees with a replica firearm at the following locations: See’s Candies in Salinas on April 6, 2015; Room for Dessert in Monterey on April 8, 2015; Subway in Salinas on April 12, 2015, Baskin Robbins in Salinas on April 18, 2015; Kara’s Cupcakes in Monterey on May 6, 2015; and Mattress Nation in Sand City on May 17, 2015.
It was at Mattress Nation that his cell phone slipped out of his pocket as he tested mattresses and was left behind, allowing police to recognize and nab him. He was also nicknamed “The Eat Fresh Robber” by Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s deputies because he targeted four Subway restaurants.
Having been bound over for trial by the court, Knight will next be arraigned on a felony information in Department 4 on February 18, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. Knight remains in custody in lieu of bail.
