On 6/4/2016, CHP units responded to a collision with injuries on State Route 1 (SR-1) south of Jensen Road in Monterey County at approximately 11:15pm.  Upon arrival this was determined to be a head on collision with fatal injuries.

Party #1 (40 year old male from Santa Cruz) was traveling north on SR-1 driving a 2002 GMC Sierra.  Party #2 (34 year old female from Watsonville) was traveling south on SR-1 driving a 2010 Buick Enclave with 4 juvenile passengers.  According to witnesses at the scene, the GMC was attempting to pass another vehicle and crossed over the double yellow lines directly in front of the path of the 2010 Buick.  The Buick and GMC collided head-on within the southbound lane of SR-1.

Upon emergency personnel arrival, both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene as a result of this collision.  The juvenile passengers were transported to Valley Medical Center in San Jose with moderate injuries.  SR-1 was completely closed from Dolan Road to Salinas Road for approximately 4.5 hours.

The collision is currently under investigation.  It is unknown if alcohol/drugs are a factor in this collision.  The identities of the deceased will be released through the Monterey County Coroner’s Office upon notification of next of kin.
