• Drunken Driver Kills Traffic Control Employee

On 10/30/2014 at approximately midnight, Bay Traffic Solutions was conducting utility work on State Route 68 east of Corral De Tierra Road.  Crews were conducting one way traffic control when a 1999 Mercedes Benz traveled through the cone pattern and passed a pilot vehicle at a high rate of speed.  The Mercedes Benz continued eastbound and struck an employee conducting traffic control.  After this collision, the Mercedes continued east for approximately 1/2 mile before being stopped by witnesses who remained with the driver until emergency personnel could arrive.

The Bay Traffic Solutions employee, 51 year-old Jesus Fernandez from Tracy, CA, suffered major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The driver of the Mercedes, identified as 50 year old Adam Zubiate from Salinas, Ca, was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI and booked into the Monterey County Jail.  SR-68 was closed from Corral De Tierra Road to Laureles Grade Road until approximately 2:28am.

This collision is currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
