• Half Marathon’s 3K and 5K Courses Shift to All-Coastal Route

The Pacific Grove Lighthouse 5K and newly-named “By the Bay” Kids 3K race routes are shifting from a downtown start in Pacific Grove to an all-coastal route along the town’s scenic Ocean View Blvd.  The race start and finish gathering spots will now be in Lovers Point Park to better accommodate the hundreds of runners and walkers participating in the November 15 races.

Held in conjunction with the Half Marathon on Monterey Bay, the two races offer shorter distances on a portion of the half marathon course which will be run the following day, Sunday, November 16.

“We decided to change the course, primarily for logistical reasons,” said Doug Thurston, race director of the Big Sur International Marathon which organizes the Half Marathon events.  “Previously we had three different venues — in downtown, Jewell Park and near Lovers Point — which required multiple set ups of equipment and manpower.  The new course, run entirely along the coastline, can be facilitated from one area at Lovers Point, and impacts fewer residents and businesses.”

Approximately 1,100 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the two Saturday races.  The Pacific Grove Lighthouse 5K, sponsored by Rabobank, offers awards to runners in 5-year age categories for the 3.1-mile run.  The awards ceremony will be held in the park at 9:30 a.m.  The 3K is a timed, 1.8-mile fun run with no awards.  Participants in each event receive a finishers’ medallion, a race shirt and post-race food.  Kids’ activities from MY Museum will be available in the park along with a $5 pancake breakfast hosted by the Pacific Grove Kiwanis Club.

Registration for the Lighthouse 5K and By the Bay Kids’ 3K races is available online at www.bigsurhalfmarathon.org until November 11 or in person Friday, November 14 at the race expo at the Monterey Conference Center from noon until 6 p.m., or on race morning, November 15.  Prices for the 5K are $30 for adults 18 and older and $20 for youth 17 and younger.  Prices for the 3K are $5 for children ages 5-17 and $20 for ages 18 and older.  Limited spots are still open for Sunday’s Half Marathon on Monterey Bay.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm.
