• Killer of Homeless Man gets 56 Years to Life

Jesse Devlin Quiming, age 32, of Monterey was sentenced by Judge Julie R. Culver to 56 years-to-life in prison for the murder of Scott Long, age 40, and the attempted manslaughter of Tyler Misamore, age 23. Quiming’s sentence was increased because of a prior robbery conviction in 2005.

On June 19, 2015, just after midnight, there were a number of homeless people preparing to campout on the back patio of the Monterey City Library on Pacific Street. An argument developed between Quiming and Long over Long’s refusal to share his alcohol with Quiming. A witness testified that Quiming appeared to be “brooding” for about 10 minutes after being denied the alcohol. Without warning Quiming walked over to where Long was seated and stabbed him four times with one blow penetrating the heart. Tyler Misamore came to Long’s defense and grabbed Quiming, but he was too late. Scott Long died at the scene. Misamore suffered four stab wounds.

Quiming fled the area discarding his knife and blood-stained shirt. He was captured 24 hours later by Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies hiding near Carmel High School.

Monterey police officers were on site within minutes after an eyewitness ran to the police department to report the crimes. Their investigation led to an immediate identification of Quiming who had left his backpack behind containing numerous items with his personal information.
