• Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration: March + Program

    Monday, January 21, The Monterey Peninsula Chapter of the Pan-Hellenic Council is planning the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration.  Ensuring this year’s event is a success we invite your participation during the march and as a guest during the program.
    11:00 am Assembly will begin at the Monterey County Social Services Building located at Obama Way and Noche Buena Streets in Seaside. Groups are asked to provide their banners and or/ signs for the march.  We are asking churches and schools to encourage our young people to participate in the march.
    12:00 noon Participants will be organized for the march and depart.
    The procession will head west on Obama Way, South on Fremont Street, East on Hilby Avenue where it will conclude at the Oldemeyer Center, 986 Hilby Avenue, Seaside.
    1:00 pm The program is scheduled to begin as soon as participants arrive at the center and are seated. Everyone is welcome.
    Dr. Chris Griffith, keynote speaker, is a general adult, child and adolescent psychiatrist and a Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Griffith is a former clinical assistant professor at Emory University and is currently a clinical assistant professor at Morehouse School of Medicine and is employed by Kaiser Permanente in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Griffith has received a number of awards related to his efforts on childhood obesity. He has been a recipient of The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award presented by the City of Seaside & The Pan-Hellenic Council. He was so inspired by his last visit to Seaside that it resulted in a book.
    David Anthony Johnson, making a guest appearance, is a musician and noted orator. His music highlights civil and human rights. Mr. Johnson established a non-profit organization that helps troubled youth realize their talents.
    Our program will honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. In addition we will honor him with 40 days of service challenge. We are asking everyone to participate as an individual or group. On this special day consider what you can do for others. We look forward to seeing you on the 21st.
