• Murder suspect booked

Sonny Nguyen, 26, the suspect in the murder of Judith Salazar in her Pacific Grove home, has been booked into Monterey County jail on the charges and is being held there in lieu of $1 million bail. Nguyen had been treated at a San Jose hospital trauma center for knife wounds he received in the murder incident.

Salazar, 46, was the grandmother of Nguyen’s two children. Her daughter and the children lived with her in the home on 17 Mile Drive.

As the investigation is ongoing, Pacific Grove Police will not speculate on whether Nguyen’s wounds were self-inflicted or defensive, and await forensic reports. They will not speculate, either, on a motive for the murder.

Salazar’s grandchildren, Nguyen’s children, were in the home at the time of the murder but were not harmed. The younger child is about 18 months old and the older child is under three years old. An order for child support was handed down against Nguyen some months ago.

Their mother was at work at the time of the murder, which occurred at sometime after 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21. Nguyen took a cab from Seaside, where he lives, to the home and when he did not come back out and pay the fare, the cab driver called police. Officers discovered the murder when they attempted to contact Nguyen inside the home.
