• Pacific Grove, on the Brink, Stages 7th Inning Rally to Down Gonzales 3-2

    By Brian “Woodie” Wood
The Pacific Grove Breakers traveled to windy Gonzales on Friday (Apr. 20) to take on the Spartans in a return match from Tuesday where PG had come out the victor 13-0. Tonight’s game was a pitcher’s duel between Dylan Graham of the Breakers and Gonzalo via Gomez of Gonzales. After 4 ½ innings the score was 1-0 PG, with the Breakers’ run coming in the first on a walk to Trevor Heyn followed by a stolen base and RBI double by River Watts.

Meanwhile PG’s pitching and defense was stellar through the first four innings. Graham notched five strike outs, allowing no runs. Key defensive plays were a force out when second baseman Nathan Wood ranged far to his left to snag a grounder and spun to deliver a strike to Heyn at second; and a throw out of a runner at second attempting to steal by Rosas, Heyn putting on the tag. The Breakers had eleven runners in the first five innings, but could only tally the one run. Josh Mares had two singles plus a single by pinch hitter Anthony Alliotti and walks to Colby Burnell, Watts, and Freddie Albert.

In the bottom of the fifth, Gonzales took advantage of two PG miscues and scored two runs off of an error, a double by via Gomez, and a wild pitch. However, Graham knuckled down with runners on second and third and one out as he retired the next two batters on a line out to centerfield and a strike out to end the inning.

Going into the seventh, PG found themselves down 2-1, needing a run to tie and two to go ahead. PG proceeded to stage both a one out and a two out rally. Heyn stroked a one out single up the middle and stole second. Graham knocked him home on a single to right field tying the game. With two outs and nobody on, Hunter Hanes reached on an infield single. Rosas advanced Hanes to third with a single to left field and with some heads up base running took second on the throw to third base. After Watts was intentionally walked, Colby Burnell delivered a single to the left of the shortstop into center field to drive home Hanes and a give Pacific Grove a 3-2 lead.

Heyn came on in relief in the bottom of the seventh and sparkled as he set down Gonzales 1-2-3 with a strike out, ground out, and strike out to save the game for winning pitcher Graham.

Josh Mares had two hits for the Breakers and Heyn scored two of PG’s three runs. PG, tied for second in the MTAL with Carmel, travels to Atherton on Saturday (Apr. 21) to play Sacred Heart Prep. PG and Carmel play twice next week with both still in the hunt for the MTAL crown, 1 ½ games behind Soledad.
