On the recommendation of the Monterey County Health Department, the City of Monterey has closed McAbee Beach as a safety precaution because a small amount of a petroleum-like substance has leaked in the area. The City will have the material tested to determine what it is. Staff is trying to determine the source of the leak and stop it. At this time, the leak is minor, confined to the remnants of a cement foundation of a former building located on the site. The beach will remain closed until further notice.
