• Search for Big Sur Hiker Arvin Nelson Continues

Arvin NelsonArvin Nelson departed on an eight day backpacking trip in the Ventana Wilderness, located in the Los Padres National Forest. Arvin was dropped off by a friend at China Camp, located near Tassajara Road. He planned to hike the eastern side of the Ventana, an area that he has never ventured into.

Arvin is an experienced hiker and planned to walk out the Pine Ridge Trail back into the Big Sur Area. His trek was supposed to end sometime around August 14, 2014. He told his friends if he didn’t make contact with them by Friday August 15, 2014, to report him missing. A missing person report was made by Arvin’s friends on August 16, 2014 and search efforts began. As of August 20, 2014, Search efforts have continued utilizing different resources. Those resources include the National Guard (Air National Guard and Army National Guard), Cal Fire, U.S. Forest Service, CHP, Monterey County USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), California Rescue Dog Association (CARDA), CAL ESAR (Explorer Search and Rescue), Coast Guard, Monterey Bay Chapter Red Cross, and the following county search and rescue teams: Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, Marin, Bay Area Mountain Rescue Unit, Contra Costa and San Benito.

These teams have conducted both air and ground searches, concentrating on a route agenda Arvin told his friends he would be following during the trip.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
