• Student Science Fair Coming This Weekend

To be held at California State University Monterey Bay

    **Public Invited to Attend**

WHAT:                 Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair Competition

WHEN:                 Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 15, 2015

WHERE:               California State University Monterey Bay, University Center, Bldg. 29

Science fairs distinguish up and coming scientists who demonstrate 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, communication and collaboration, discipline, and project management.

Nearly 500 students from middle schools and high schools across Monterey County will exhibit and present their projects at the 2015 Monterey County Science and Engineering Fair Competition.

“Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) help develop knowledge and skills that are becoming increasingly important, regardless of career path,” said Dr. Nancy Kotowski, County Superintendent of Schools. “The skills gained through this experience will help give our students a competitive edge as they continue their education in preparation for entering a globalized, high tech workforce.”

During the fair, students display their research projects, and present their findings to a team of 100 scientists who volunteer as judges. Through interactions with the participants, judges confirm the students’ understanding of the scientific concepts and the research methods involved in their projects. The judges also offer practical and positive feedback regarding the students’ application of the scientific method to a problem.

Twenty-two (22) top projects across the Junior (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12) Divisions will be selected to participate in the California State Science Fair. The top three Senior Division projects may be eligible to participate in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair, which will be held in Pittsburgh, PA in May.

The public is invited to view winning science projects at the University Center from 11:30 a.m. until the awards ceremony at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.
